William Cowper once said, “variety is the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavor” and the staff at Gecko Designs is about as spicy as it comes.
When I first started working for Gecko Designs, I immediately felt at home and was welcomed into the family with open arms. Over the course of my first year with the company, I have found countless areas that we all have in common – an important piece to the puzzle when it comes to a healthy work culture. What I didn’t realize, at first, was how wildly diverse we are as a team, as well!
With 11 people on staff, coming from all walks of life, we thought it would be fun to try a little social experiment. I asked each of them to tell me what their current favorite song is, so that I could compile a music playlist to reflect our tastes. I was shocked to see how eclectic the list was!
Even the responses to my request varied. Take a moment to think about it. If I asked you to give me a song, just one, that was your current favorite – forget about your all-time favorite song, that question seemed to derail the experiment as there are way too many to choose from – would you be able to quickly come up with a song? Some of our staff were able to give me an answer right away, while others tried to negotiate; “Does it have to be just one song?”…”Can I give you a song from a few different genres?”…”Can I get back to you? This is going to take some heavy soul searching.”
It turns out that our motley crew (pun intended) of designers, developers, and project managers have something in common – but it certainly isn’t our tastes in music! It’s our passion for that which makes us smile inside and out. Though not all of us enjoyed every song that was submitted by our fellow staffers, we all laughed and appreciated the insight that the experiment provided into what we’re all bopping away to in our AirPods. We’ll see what happens when I open Pandora’s Box and ask what their favorite foods are!
