Website & Email Hosting
What is website hosting?
Configuring a new website involves two key elements: a domain name and a hosting server.
The domain name of a website is its’ URL or web address, such as geckodesigns.com. Any number of domain names can direct traffic at a website simultaneously. These domain names can be purchased from reputable vendors online. The ownership of each domain name must be renewed annually or the address will be available to the public for purchase.
Web hosting servers are secure computers that are rented out in order to store the actual files of a website. Hosting servers are typically rented on a monthly basis. The price is dependent primarily on factors including the amount of bandwidth, storage capacity, number of email addresses supported, technical support, and website backup or failsafe measures. There are many features of hosting services that you will read about. Some features are standard, while others are premium services, and still others are just marketing jargon – such items are akin to telling you that your new car comes with wheels and tires. You can also visit the website for more information.
Our clients always have the option to use our services or their own independently selected web hosting services. There are some technical aspects involved that directly influence the functionality of your website. The type of server that you rent dictates how your website is assembled, our favorite server is called an Apache server which is the most common type and uses an open-source dynamic website language called PHP. The second most common alternative is a Windows server which uses a proprietary code language which we avoid because of its limitations.
